The Jazz Loft Project. From 1957 to 1965 the pioneering photojournalist, W. Eugene Smith, made 1,740 reel-to-reel tape recordings (approx. 4000 hours) and took nearly 40,000 photographs in a loft building in Manhattan’s wholesale flower district (821 Sixth Avenue, to be exact) that was a popular late-night haunt for some of the biggest names in 1950’s and 60’s jazz, including Thelonious Monk, Zoot Sims, Ornette Coleman, Chick Corea and many others. Though it was Smith’s largest body of work, the recordings and photos remained virtually unknown until the inauguration of “The Jazz Loft Project,” a multimedia exhibition that opened at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in February 17, 2010. Curated by writer and Jazz Loft Project Director, Sam Stephenson, who has authored two books on Smith (Dream Street: W Eugene Smith’s Pittsburgh Project and W. Eugene Smith) the Jazz Loft Project is dedicated to uncovering and preserving the stories behind this nostalgic time and place in American cultural history. Stephenson will share stories from his latest book, The Jazz Loft Project in his appearance at Outpost as well as at the Verve Gallery of Photography in Santa Fe.
