The versatile Tom McDermott is a pianist/composer/arranger as well as an illustrator and writer. Born in St. Louis in 1957, he graduated from St. Louis University in 1978 with a B.A. in Fine Art and began a career as a free-lance journalist, writing mainly about music. Getting caught up in the Scott Joplin revival, in 1981 he recorded an album of original ragtime music entitled New Rags. Lured by the music of Crescent City pianists James Booker, Professor Longhair and Dr. John, McDermott moved to New Orleans where he found steady work as a solo pianist and in jazz bands, including the Dukes of Dixieland with whom he performed from 1990-1995. He subsequently recorded several albums exploring the rich New Orleans piano tradition. His 2002 release, Danza, with clarinetist Evan Christopher, expanded his investigations into early music and the Latin influences which worked their way into the culture of New Orleans. In 2005, McDermott released a Brazilian-music focus, Choro do Norte, combining the work of of one of Rio’s hottest choro groups, Tira Poeira, with New Orleans musicians Evan Christopher and trombonist Rick Trolsen. Most recently, McDermott has been seen performing as himself on several episodes of the HBO hit show, Treme, about post-Katrina New Orleans.
